Here are a few photos from a recent job. The Valspar Chalkboard paint was applied over a smooth (sealed) surface. The key thing is to start with a (smooth) surface in order to write and clean easily. The same is true with dry erase products such as Idea Paint.
The Valspar product required 3 coats which can be done in 1 day. I sanded between each coat with 220 to ensure the smoothest surface possible and used a 3/8" microfiber ArroWorthy roller cover.
Initial smooth surface was lightly sanded using 220.
First cut was a bit difficult to get to look solid.
Here is 2 coats (not fully dry)
